Match Report: Surrey Storm strike Lightning Victory

Match Report: Surrey Storm strike Lightning Victory:

Surrey Storm made it two wins from two in front of a first home crowd of the season, with a 66- 38 win over a lacklustre Loughborough Lightning.

Over 800 netball fans packed into a sell-out Surrey Sports Park for what was the battle of the undefeated teams in this season’s Fiat Netball Superleague.

Cheered on by their home fans Storm dominated large spells of the game. After taking a 22-9 first quarter lead, the Guildford-based team continued to build on their lead to eventually win by a huge 28 point margin.

The first quarter saw Lightning taking the first two points, their defence making Storm work, but some fast-paced passes between Trippick and Greenway meant Storm took the lead. The Attacking trio worked well, creating some impressive play around the shooting circle and Storm’s strong teamwork showed, with balls flying down the court and into the net as they settled into the match. The quarter finished with a goal by Dunn, taking the score 22-9 to Storm.

Quarter two saw no change in the starting line-up and Storm came out looking Strong. Lightning’s attack made Storm’s defence work hard to turn the ball around, but Holland made some brilliant mid-court interceptions. Storm settled comfortably into the game, some fast-paced play and accurate shooting from Dunn and Cookey, increased the goal difference. Quarter two finishing again with a goal from Storm and the half time score stood 38-16 to Storm.

After half time, quarter three saw Modeste replace Greenway at WA and Betsey came on at GK, replacing Reid. The change in team saw Storm make some small errors on the court, but made little difference to the score as the game continued in a similar style. This quarter saw some brilliant interceptions, Cookey making an easy interception of Lightning’s centre pass and seeing the ball into the net. The substitutions had little effect on the score, which stood at 55-24 to Storm.

Storm went into Quarter four knowing a victory was on the cards. Bello replaced Seaton at WD and a confident and comfortable made for an enjoyable quarter to watch. There was some lovely mid-court play and passes, making easy work of Lightning. Modeste had a good last quarter, and although Lightning managed to get some goals back, Storm had the game from the beginning and a confident performance saw the final score standing 66-38.

Player-coach Tamsin Greenway, said, “It was another impressive performance from the girls tonight against a talented Loughborough side. We played a commanding first half, which gave us an opportunity to try some different combinations on court. That’s a huge help at this early stage of the season, and to get a convincing win too ensured it was a good night for us in front of our home fans.”

Storm’s defensive starlet Katy Holland was awarded the Gidden Place Most Valuable Player after impressing against Lightning’s attacking line.

Storm’s next match is away against Team Bath on Friday 3rd February.
