Continuing our series of blogs from within the The FIAT Netball Superleague that we are bringing you this season, today we have the thoughts of Northern Thunder's Captain, Sara Bayman, on
the team's away trips, the opening rounds of the FNSL and her
recovery from injury...
They will give you an insight into the lives and thoughts of players and coaches who you see every week but will give you a behind the scenes peak at their daily routines.
"Well we’re 3 rounds into the FNSL and there’s already been some great games and some surprise results. It’s always nice to have a look at how everyone’s doing but you can’t afford to start worrying about anyone else. On Saturday we travelled to Loughborough to face a new young Lightning team. As always I have no clue what happened on the journey there as, despite a full coach, I found room to spread out and enjoy my pre-game “nap”. The NTL game before ours woke me up though as Thunder had another good win with some exciting young talent on court."
"We were satisfied with the performance we put out and the win. However, we still had an off quarter and are aware that this is a habit we need to get rid of. So this week we will be looking for consistency against self-labelled title contenders, Celtic Dragons. As much as I enjoy sleeping on coaches it’ll be good to be back playing at home and we’ll be looking for our strong home support to see us past the Welsh side."
"The main story over the weekend was the snow. When we came out after the game we were greeted by a few inches of snow and it was still falling. I was meant to be driving back but due to the joys of rear-wheel drive, was going nowhere. The scheduled England training day on Sunday was cancelled but luckily the accommodation in Loughborough was still booked so I settled down to an evening of tea, shortbread and David Beckham….I’ve had worse Saturday nights. Whilst I settled for the safety of driving back Sunday morning, the rest of the girls on the coach trekked it through country roads, blizzards and jack-knifed lorries to eventually get home about 12.30am….so much for our “short” away trip of the season."
"This week it’s back to training and planning for the game. Saturday was only my third full game back from injury (not counting Fast Net games) so I’m still working on the elusive match-fitness. However, with the next International break only being in April this has been a good solid training block for me and I’m starting to feel the benefits."
"As for the rest of the team, avoiding causing harm to themselves and others is the hardest thing. Kerry, Krista and Rach took Janelle sledging for the first time on Sunday and after narrowly missing a tree, I hear she made no mistake when it came to the child….oops!"
"Now it’s onto planning and preparing for Saturday to make sure that we keep our top four aspirations in our control……nothing can be assumed by anyone this season."
